Fruh Kolsch & 1 week taste test of Seeing Red V2

Pin It Now! I paid drinkstore a visit yesterday to stock up on interesting beers. I started off light with this Kolsch called Fruh. Honestly I am not sure I get the appeal of Kolsch. Essentially this tastes like an average lager. Perhaps a little more delicate. The aroma was just a malty lager, could have been Carlsberg for all I noticed. The only redeeming quality was a nice dry and bitter finish.
That said, this beer was very easy to drink and I would not be opposed to drinking more of it. It is just not very interesting to me.

It has been 6 days since I kegged Seeing Red V2. I got 3 sample bottles (leftovers) out of the batch. The 1 week test is from the 330ml bottle. It is well carbonated by now, it just lacks the conditioning needed after only a week.
The head and colour seem to be what I want. It is has been sitting on my desk now for 10 minutes and the head is still as you see it in the picture above.
The aroma is what I was going for, full on malt with a little roast coffee. Plenty of caramel and toffee notes. All of this comes through on the taste with the addition of some peppery notes. The cascade finish, though muted compared to what it was at kegging time, is still apparent and gives it a lovely light citrus finish and bite on the tip of the tongue.
Only a little more time will tell if this version is as good or better than the first one.
I look forward to trying the kegged version with the oak chips.
My other two sample bottles are 750ml bottles. I will try one of them next week to see how it comes along.

  1. Kölsch doesn't work if it's not on cask. Fact. End of. I nearly didn't bother going to the big Früh pub in Cologne because I was so unimpressed by their bottled beer. But cask Früh is lovely.

  2. So that's why I don't get it then... Right the hunt for cask Kölsch is on.

  3. That would be Cologne, then. I must get a guide done for Beoir.

  4. Like the sound of the Red. I should bring a bottle of mine when we meet in a few weeks and we can do a side by side.
