In late 2005, Fuller's bought the George Gale & Co brewery. The main reason for the sale was probably to get the pubs owned by the brewery but there is at least one beer available under the Gale's brand and that is prize old ale. In some ways this beer is created like a Gueuze where old and new ales are blended together to create the finished product and then bottle conditioned. Of course it tastes nothing like a Gueuze.
This is a 9% monster of barrel aged beer. The aroma is all dried fruit like raisins and prunes along with a lovely woody fruitiness. It tastes wonderful. It is rather boozy but not in a paint thinner way, more like a strong sherry (which it rather resembles anyway). A little chocolate and nuttiness complement the experience.
An absolute pleasure from start to finish.
