I awoke to the news this morning that the wonderful and limited edition Shandon Century Stout has won the title: Europe's Best Dry Stout 2012. I hope this encourages them to brew it again, I bought as many bottles as I could but alas they are long gone.
OK so it might not be the best dry stout in the world award, that title goes to Deschutes Obsidian Stout along with the title for the best dry stout in America. I've not had this stout so I can't comment on how good it is.
I just think it's great that a small brewery in Ireland even got on the list even though there are some excellent beers here. Even more impressive is that Obsidian gets an overall score of 99 on ratebeer. Shandon Century on the other hand Shandon Century does not even have enough reviews on Ratebeer or Beeradvocate for that matter. Does Shandon Century deserve it's new title though? Damn right it does because I along with many other voters decided it deserved the title of the Beer of the year 2012 as rated by Beoir.
The award was presented at The Franciscan Well itself during their Easterfest 2012 beer festival. John Duffy, Beoir treasurer (AKA TheBeerNut) presented the award to Pádraig of the Franciscan Well (not the brewer) when we had a quiet moment. I took the pictures as I was handy and had a decent enough camera.

Just a quick note to say that Metalman Brewing Company won the two runner up awards for Windjammer and Metalman Pale Ale respectively.
Speaking of Metalman, they are looking for for an intern brewing assistant. They have just put the last intern on the payroll so if you are eligible for the job bridge scheme and are interested in gaining brewery experience with a possibility of going full time, or even just gaining the experience to set up your own brewery then contact them asap.
So yes Shandon Century absolutely deserves the title Europe's Best Dry Stout 2012. Looking at the list of judges, I see a lot of respected names I recognise and would trust their judgement. If these guys thought Shandon Century was deserving of the title, that is high praise indeed because they are the heavyweights of the beer world.
