I missed out on this special from the Porterhouse Brewing Company last year. It was a collaboration brew with Czech brewer Joseph Krysl using Pilsner Urquell yeast and was brewed for their Oktoberfest celebrations.
The Oktoberfest festival is back from Thursday. This time they have a black lager called PHD which is a different beer to Bohemia Freak Out. This one is brewed with yeast from the University brewery in Bavaria, Weihenstephaner but it's also 5%. You see what they did with the name?
I had a few sneak preview pints on Saturday and it was lovely stuff. I did not take a picture sorry, I was there to drink with friends rather than be a beer anorak.
Needless to say it looks like a porter or stout. It tastes not far off it with a strong roast coffee and caramel/toffee backbone however you can tell it's a lager. There is a sort of crisp citrus bite that cuts through the roast. The result is a very easy to drink and refreshing dark lager, with all the flavour of a good porter.
This is no Guinness black lager, which is like a watery Guinness.
The porterhouse's Oktoberfest runs from this Thursday the 11th until the 25th of November. As well as their own, there will be about 5 other German beers on tap and many more in bottles.
