It's not often I get a beer from Lithuania and even less often that I get a commercial beer in a plastic bottle. It was given to me by a homebrew mate that spends time over there. Gyvas Tamsusis translates to Live Dark, or maybe Alive Dark. Perhaps that simply means that it's a bottle conditioned dark beer. I'm not great with languages so if my translation is wrong, blame Google translate. It's brewed by the Kauno brewery in Kaunas, Lithuania.
How's the beer? It was interesting. It's only 5% for a start but from the sweetness, I imagine it could ferment out a little more. A strong aroma of prune juice and muscovado to start. On tasting, this translates in to a sort of oxidised fizzy prune juice. I know that sounds terrible but it's not actually that bad. I have had many terrible beers in my time but this doesn't count as one of them. It's not my sort of beer, while I do love prune flavour in beer, I don't like it to be as sweet as syrup at the same time. It might be interesting spending some time in Lithuania to see what other type of beers they have.
