So what is the pub like? Well I got there on Saturday at 1pm to find out. It was the pick-up point for the bus taking us to Trouble Brewing (see next post). L. Mulligan Grocer (they kept the name) is a charming looking traditional Dublin pub in Stoneybatter. It is beside The Glimmerman pub and across the road from Drinkstore making Stoneybatter a bit of a craft beer oasis.
On walking in the door I was greeted by Colin behind the bar who said "Reuben can I interest you in something interesting?" So I said "Of course, what have you got?" I was presented with Dogfish head Indian brown ale. Colin said it would make a great breakfast and since I hadn't eaten I decided it was a good idea. At 7.2% this is a fun way to start the day. It was almost a porter I thought, packed full of chocolate and caramel. I found it a little nutty and it sort of had a woody finish, though it is not barrel aged to my knowledge. Dogfish head are known for their 60, 90 & 120 minute IPA's. These are continuously hopped as opposed to hop additions at specific times so a lot of people associate Dogfish head with supper hoppy beers but if you expect the Indian Brown to be a hop bomb you will be disappointed. In fact it was hard to notice anything hoppy but there was a little earthiness. At first I did not notice the 7.2% but about half way down I noticed the nice warm fuzzy feeling make itself known. One to sip this. I had to follow it with a much lighter beer so I had good ole reliable Galway Hooker.
Down the back is a nice raised area with more of a restaurant feel to it. sure enough this is were most people will be seated for food but it does not matter as you can eat anywhere. There is even a little bar down the back.

At 2:30 we left for the brewery tour but returned later that evening. One interesting beer I shared with some Americans was from a brewery I had not been to in California and neither American had heard of it. Blue Frog DIPA 3 is a double IPA with impressive stats. 8.5% and 105IBU. I found it quite tasty if a little thinner than I would expect. very malty, usual grapefruit and I also got raisins. However, 105 IBU? It was not all that bitter at all and there are other beers that cost less and give more. We switched to large bottles of Big Daddy after this for €3 cheaper.

Saturday was my first time in Mulligan's and have to say I really liked it, heading back there on Wednesday for a few and am already looking forward to tackling some of the great American beers they have in their bottle selection.

ReplyDeleteA great sign indeed. Colin has worked in the drinks supply market for years so has a load of contacts. Getting credit and good discounts is a bonus when starting out.
